The study by Tamburrini et al. compared MRI with arthroscopy in 70 patients who had post-traumatic knee pain but normal plain radiographs. MRI detected and characterized occult bone and/or cartilage injuries and showed a strong correlation with arthroscopic findings; the authors concluded that MRI “can help avoid diagnostic arthroscopy” in this setting [Tamburrini, 1997, PMID 9465206].
