Multiple prospective studies have shown that adding subcutaneous or intra-articular local anesthetic does not reduce pain during or after shoulder MR arthrography. In the study whose title matches the question, pain scores were identical with or without lidocaine infiltration, leading the authors to conclude that “Local anesthesia is not required” [Spick et al., 2014, PMID 24698298]. Similar findings were reported earlier by Koivikko & Koskinen [2007, PMID 17729004].
