A study evaluating the OraQuick HIV-1/2 rapid test performed directly on sputum from tuberculosis patients in Central India reported 90 % sensitivity and 100 % specificity compared with serum ELISA, leading the authors to conclude that the assay “may provide a useful strategy for conducting HIV surveillance in possible co-infected TB patients at peripheral centres” [Desikan, 2013, PMID 23375036].
