A 5-year prospective cohort of Black South Africans with optimal blood pressure showed that those who converted to hypertension had higher baseline smoking rates, larger waist circumference and higher γ-glutamyl-transferase (a marker of alcohol intake). The authors concluded that “the surge in hypertension … is largely explained by modifiable risk factors,” i.e., behavioural factors [Schutte, 2012, PMID:22825590].
