Evidence: A study comparing conventional versus hydrophilic guidewires in 125 iliac and femoral PTA procedures found that hydrophilic guidewires significantly increased technical success, especially for occlusions and more complex lesions [Poncyliusz, 2004, PMID 16538201]. Earlier work also showed higher overall success rates after adoption of hydrophilic guidewires [Hartnell, 1995, PMID 7879963]. Thus, hydrophilic guidewires do significantly improve technical success rates of peripheral PTA.
