Neutrophil-predominant CSF pleocytosis (50-70% polys), mildly elevated protein (70 mg/dL) and a CSF/blood glucose ratio just under 0.55 are characteristic of acute pyogenic (bacterial) meningitis, whereas tuberculous meningitis is usually lymphocytic with much higher protein and lower glucose, herpes encephalitis shows lymphocytes with normal glucose, and cerebral malaria typically has a normal CSF profile [Tamune 2014 PMID 24361137; Swanson 2015 PMID 26628732].
