Amide-type agents such as lidocaine rarely produce true hypersensitivity, whereas ester drugs like procaine are metabolized to p-aminobenzoic acid, a well-known allergen; therefore lidocaine is preferred in dental practice because allergic reactions are far less common [Eggleston & Lush, 1996, PMID 8826570; Bruynzeel, 1996, PMID 11921931].
