Infants born very prematurely are routinely referred to an ophthalmologist for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening; current AAP guidelines call for eye examinations in all infants with gestational age ≤ 30–32 weeks or birth-weight ≤ 1500 g, with lower thresholds (e.g., 28 weeks) clearly qualifying for screening [Fierson, 2018, PMID 30478242]. A 28-week preterm baby therefore warrants ophthalmology consultation, whereas respiratory distress, jaundice, or a 2300 g infant do not necessarily trigger ROP screening.
