Cystine-Lactose-Electrolyte-Deficient (CLED) agar is non-selective and, unlike MacConkey (which contains bile salts and crystal violet), readily supports the growth of Gram-positive cocci and yeasts such as Staphylococcus spp. and Candida spp.; this broader recovery is advantageous in urine bacteriology [McKeever, 1981, PMID 7240008; Palacios, 2002, PMID 12372235].
