Antischkow (caterpillar-shaped) nuclei are reported in oral epithelial cells of sickle-cell anaemia, iron-deficiency anaemia and in aphthous ulcers, but herpes-simplex lesions instead characteristically show multinucleated “Tzanck” cells and Cowdry inclusions, not Antischkow cells [Hays 1977, PMID 265483; Jacobs 1960, PMID 13718549; Wood 1975, PMID 1058615; Solomon 1984, PMID 6317901].
