Rhinocerebral mucormycosis classically presents in diabetics in ketoacidosis with black necrotic tissue in the nasal cavity, facial swelling, and orbital involvement. The drug of choice for this rapidly progressive infection is high-dose intravenous Amphotericin B; azoles and standard antibiotics are inadequate as initial therapy [Dökmetaş, 2002, PMID 12062859; Moss, 1982, PMID 7181433].
