Guidelines for type 1 diabetes advise the first dilated eye examination 5 years after the onset of diabetes (or at age ≥10 years), because sight-threatening retinopathy is very rare before that time; earlier examination is reserved for type 2 diabetes or anyone with visual symptoms. Therefore, a patient with a one-year history and no complications should be scheduled for an exam at the 5-year mark. [Wang 2027, 2017, PMID 28334336; Nathan et al., 2017, PMID 28423305]
