Kirkland’s gingivectomy knife is designed with a broad, kidney-shaped blade that matches the contour of the facial and lingual gingiva and is therefore the instrument routinely used to make the first external-bevel incision on facial surfaces during a conventional gingivectomy. Orban’s knife is reserved for interdental areas, and #11 or #12 BP blades are alternatives rather than the standard first instrument on the facial aspect [Kaur, 2010, PMID 21691546].
