Firing shrinkage is largely governed by how efficiently porcelain particles pack; when all particles are the same size, packing is loose and the mass contracts more as it sinters, whereas a mixed (non-uniform) particle-size distribution packs densely and shrinks less. Thus, the degree of condensation shrinkage depends on the uniformity of particle size [Rasmussen et al., 1997, PMID 9467322].
