Topical corticosteroids are first-line, highly effective anti-inflammatory therapy for eczematous (atopic/contact) dermatitis, whereas dermal atrophy is a side-effect and their use is contraindicated or of little benefit in viral bullous lesions such as herpes simplex or herpes zoster [Chong, 2016, PMID 25869743; Zug, 1996, PMID 8816570].
