Desogestrel is formulated for routine daily contraception (either as a progestin-only “mini-pill” or within combined pills) and is not recommended or studied for single-dose emergency (post-coital) use, unlike the levonorgestrel pill regimen, the Yuzpe combined OCP regimen, and insertion of a Copper-T IUD, all of which are proven emergency contraception methods [op ten Berg, Adv Contracept 1991, PMID 1835255; Task Force on Post-ovulatory Methods, Lancet 1998, PMID 9708750; Goldstuck & Cheung, Int J Women’s Health 2019, PMID 31686919].
