Glass-ionomer cements bond to enamel and dentin through ionic chelation: the carboxylate groups of the polyacrylic acid in GICs chelate calcium (and other metallic) ions in the hydroxy­apatite of the tooth, forming a durable ionic bond [Powis et al., 1982, PMID 6757292; Park & Kang, 2020, PMID 32668523].
