Plasma cells make up the bulk of the chronic inflammatory infiltrate in the connective-tissue wall of established periodontal pockets, often comprising >50 % of the cells present, whereas lymphocytes and other leukocytes are fewer and erythrocytes are not increased [Carvel & Carr, 1982, PMID 6953231; Joachim et al., 1989, PMID 2639191].
