Augmentation (advancement) genioplasty is classically achieved by a sliding horizontal osteotomy of the mandibular symphysis that allows the chin segment to be moved forward and fixed in its new position; implants or free-bone grafts augment the chin but are not considered genioplasty techniques [Chang et al., 2001, PMID 11176712; Sclaroff & Williams, 1991, PMID 1642325].
