Zinc phosphate cement has the highest modulus of elasticity among traditional bases (≈12-13 GPa), markedly greater than glass-ionomer, polycarboxylate or zinc-oxide-eugenol cements, making it the most rigid and therefore best able to support the occlusal and condensation stresses of a complex amalgam restoration [Craig et al., 1976, PMID 1062449; Oilo & Espevik, 1978, PMID 281671].
