Chronic ingestion of the grass-pea Lathyrus sativus (khesari dal) produces neurolathyrism, a toxico-nutritional myelopathy that begins with weakness and spasticity of the lower limbs and can progress to irreversible inability to walk; it is classically seen in drought-prone (“dry”) regions where the pulse is eaten for long periods [Misra, 1993, PMID 8493040; Woldeamanuel, 2012, PMID 22081101].
