Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis often destroys interdental papillae and leaves permanent “crater-like” gingival defects that are frequently corrected with gingivoplasty after initial therapy, whereas desquamative gingivitis, erosive lichen planus and acute herpetic gingivostomatitis usually heal without such residual defects [Hartnett & Shiloah, 1991, PMID 2068255; Gousenbourger & Brecx, 1982, PMID 6758062].
