Relining adds new resin to the tissue-surface of the denture; even small processing errors or trapped spacing can thicken the base and open the bite, producing a measurable increase in the occlusal vertical dimension, whereas centric/condylar relations remain largely unchanged. An in-vitro study of 30 dentures found a statistically significant change in vertical dimension after relining, but only minimal shifts in centric or eccentric contacts [Verma 2024, PMID 38946509].
