Fragmented red cells (schistocytes) on smear indicate a micro-angiopathic hemolytic anemia, which is typical of DIC, TTP and the pregnancy-specific HELLP syndrome, but not of Evans syndrome—an autoimmune hemolytic anemia/thrombocytopenia that instead shows Coombs-positive spherocytes rather than schistocytes [George 2015 PMID 26637783; Lesesve 2014 PMID 24261329; Bashir 2021 PMID 33879949].
