Degenerative (pathologic) myopia is a high-myopia condition (> 6 D) that predisposes to peripheral retinal breaks, posterior staphyloma and subsequent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, reported in ~10–12 % of eyes in histopathologic series [Grossniklaus & Green, 1992, PMID 1439243; Saw et al., 2005, PMID 16101943]. It is more frequent in females and in East Asian populations, not males, and by definition involves high (≥ 6 D) refractive error.
