Splenic macrophages remove Heinz bodies formed by oxidized, denatured hemoglobin in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; the resulting partially “bitten-out” erythrocytes appear as bite cells on the smear, a finding not characteristic of sickle cell anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, or traumatic hemolysis [Agarwal, 2013, PMID 24551713; Mehta, 2017, PMID 28799315].
