Immediate care of an alkali (chuna/lime) eye burn focuses on rapid copious irrigation and removal of residual particles; detailed slit-lamp examination is deferred until after irrigation is completed so as not to delay decontamination [Khodabukus, 2009, PMID 19579400; Lusk, 1999, PMID 10205367]. Frequent sodium citrate drops, along with other topical agents, are part of the acute medical therapy that can begin soon after irrigation, but they do not precede it.
