Infants of diabetic mothers commonly develop metabolic complications driven by fetal hyperinsulinism, including hypoglycemia (not hyper-glycemia), hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, and polycythemia with subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Hyperglycemia is therefore not a typical neonatal problem in this setting [Hay, 2012, PMID 22094826; Weintrob, 1996, PMID 8887019].
