Brief, rotatory vertigo with nausea that is provoked specifically by changing head position (e.g., on first moving in bed in the morning) is the classic presentation of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV); other causes such as labyrinthitis, vestibular neuronitis, or Ménière’s disease produce more prolonged or non-positional vertigo and/or cochlear symptoms [Lee & Kim, 2010, PMID 20607044].
