The pubococcygeus portion of the levator ani forms the main supportive sling for the anterior and middle pelvic compartments; damage to it weakens bladder, urethral and vaginal support, predisposing to cystocele, enterocele and urethral descent [Eisenberg et al., 2010, PMID 20578141; Paparella et al., 2005, PMID 15290166].
