Dietary non-heme Fe³⁺ is first reduced to Fe²⁺ and then transported across the apical brush-border of the enterocyte by the divalent metal (cation) transporter-1 (DMT1), also called the divalent cation transporter; ferroportin, hephaestin and ceruloplasmin act later at the basolateral side or in plasma.
