Emergent (treatment) protocols for postpartum hemorrhage use a single rectal dose of 1 000 µg misoprostol (five 200-µg tablets), which has been shown to rapidly control bleeding when first-line oxytocics fail and is the dose quoted in standard obstetric texts and studies on acute PPH management [O’Brien, 1998, PMID 9699753; Shojai, 2004, PMID 15380748].
