Infective endocarditis characteristically produces friable vegetations along the valve cusps and may extend to cause cusp perforation or peri-valvular/myocardial (ring) abscesses [Basmadjian, 2000, PMID 10980092; Habeeb, 2016, PMID 26212894]. Formation of a left-atrial thrombus is not a usual manifestation; when it occurs it is typically related to atrial fibrillation or mitral stenosis and is only rarely reported in association with endocarditis [Shanks, 2008, PMID 18841267].
