Electron-microscopy studies of salivary acini show that rER and the nucleus lie basally, while the stacked Golgi complex occupies the cytoplasm just above the nucleus—i.e., the supranuclear zone—where it packages secretory granules for the apical pole [Céspedes 2002, PMID 12201044; Therkildsen 1994, PMID 8064132].
