The classic conservative or “expectant” approach to placenta previa—hospitalization, bed rest, transfusion support, tocolysis and delaying delivery until fetal maturity—was first outlined by McAfee and Johnson and is commonly called the “Macafee and Johnson regimen” [Mabie, 1992, PMID 1617885; Cotton, 1980, PMID 7395932]. The other options refer to techniques unrelated to placenta previa expectant care (e.g., Credé/Brandt-Andrews for placental delivery, Liley’s for Rh isoimmunization).
