Perinatal mortality counts all early neonatal deaths (within the first 7 days of life) together with late-fetal deaths (stillbirths) of adequate size or gestation; therefore an early-neonatal death of a 1000 g infant is part of the numerator, whereas post-neonatal deaths and abortions <500 g are not, and the stillbirth threshold is typically ≥1000 g or ≥28 weeks—not 500 g [Cocchi & Fiorentini, 1981, PMID 6927608].
