Atropine is the classic antimuscarinic routinely given before anesthesia to dry airway secretions and protect against vagal bradycardia; multiple reports still describe it as a “commonly used” or “routine” pre-anesthetic drug, more so than promethazine, scopolamine, or glycopyrrolate [Gujja 2009, PMID 19535970; Roffe 1994, PMID 8049691].
