Genioglossus originates from the genial tubercles and, together with the suprahyoid anterior belly of digastric (from the digastric fossa near the canine region), pulls the anterior mandibular segment downward and posteriorly. After bilateral fractures through the canine area, these two muscles are therefore the main forces retracting the anterior fragment of the mandible backward, whereas mylohyoid acts more inferiorly and masseter or thyrohyoid do not attach to this fragment [Wiese, 1997, PMID 9424357; Takahashi, 1990, PMID 2135316].
