Down’s (facial angle, A-B plane angle), Steiner (ANB), and Wits (AO–BO distance) each quantify the anteroposterior (A-P) maxilla-mandible relationship, with the Wits appraisal specifically devised “to measure the severity or degree of anteroposterior jaw dysplasia” [Jacobson, 1975, PMID 1054214].
Tweed analysis, however, is built around Tweed’s Triangle (FMA, FMIA, IMPA) and is aimed at evaluating lower-incisor angulation and vertical facial proportions—not the magnitude of A-P skeletal discrepancy—so it does not indicate the severity of A-P jaw dysplasia [Kang et al., 2023, PMID 37003905].
