Microscopic (histopathologic) examination of the lesion is the definitive way to tell a true ameloblastoma—especially a unicystic variant that can appear radiographically like a dentigerous cyst—from a simple developmental dentigerous cyst; radiographic, clinical, or aspiration findings alone are often overlapping and unreliable [Gunawardhana et al., 2014, PMID 24357580; Ikeshima et al., 1990, PMID 2345376].
