The Gillies temporal approach involves a small temporal incision through which an elevator is passed beneath the temporalis muscle to lift and reposition a depressed zygomatic arch; it is a classic technique for closed reduction of zygomatic (arch) fractures, not for mandible surgery or open procedures [Okamura 1989, PMID 2488903; Matsumura 1994, PMID 8029653].
